“Lincoln Village Gave Me More Than I Could Have Ever Given”
I first came to Lincoln Village in 2011 with a group from Vanderbilt for an alternative spring break trip. I had done other service trips before, but this time I felt God leading me to Huntsville. I had no idea then how much Lincoln would become a part of my life.
LVM has given me more than I could have ever given during that first week or through the many trips I’ve made since. There are plenty of books you can read about serving others and being part of the Body of Christ, but Lincoln gave me the opportunity to actually experience those things. I saw God working in the lives of children, single moms, and families, and I saw people with different gifts working together in humility and love.
Lincoln quickly became my “happy place.” When I was struggling with something, I could make the drive from Nashville to Huntsville and find a place to focus on God and experience His love through the people and work at Lincoln.
I once heard a sermon about “thin places,” where you feel especially close to God. Lincoln Village is one of those places for me. The presence of God is tangible there, and the light of Christ shines so brightly through the people and the work. It has been an honor to be a small part of what God is doing at Lincoln, and I know I’ll keep finding ways to come back.

Volunteer Spotlight: Paul Nelson
For two decades, Lincoln has been blessed by a group of self-proclaimed “old guys” who faithfully volunteer each week. Much of the work of renovating our homes has been done by these dedicated men, and each one holds a special place in our hearts. When asked about his years serving at Lincoln, Paul shared:
“It is clear that a good neighborhood and reasonable housing is a part of what people need in order to be receptive to the message that salvation can be theirs. That makes working on the housing both enjoyable and certainly worthwhile, seeing people grow in faith as they become involved at Lincoln. It’s sort of like watching a garden grow that is both planted in fertile soil and well-tended once planted.”
Paul, along with all LVM volunteers, are a true blessing to our ministry and to the families we serve.

Volunteer Spotlight: James and Audrey Starks
James and Audrey faithfully serve at Lincoln Village in the Learning Lab, as reading buddies, and through various mentoring programs. They look forward to their time at Lincoln because of the relationships they’ve built with the children and residents and the way those relationships uplift their spirits.
What makes Lincoln special to the Starks is its “willingness to serve the least of these in Jesus’ name.” They’ve seen firsthand how students respond when they know they are loved and cared for. James says, “The students at Lincoln are so different. When you feel loved and feel that somebody cares, you act differently.”
James and Audrey hope to see Lincoln’s ministry continue to grow so that more people can experience the transforming power of Jesus Christ. James puts his own calling simply: “My role is a servant. When you know your role, you take pleasure in it and you enjoy it.”
Thank you, James and Audrey, for faithfully serving the Lord with us at Lincoln Village!
