Why Have A Street Fair?

Tuesday, August 7th is this year's "National Night Out".

The Lincoln Village Neighborhood Association, LVNA, is hosting our
third annual event for National Night Out. This will be the second
time that LVNA has selected to sponsor a Street Fair. So what is
"National Night Out", and why host a Street Fair on a late weekday
afternoon?

For many years, as people poured into new suburbs or moved into
strange cities in search of work, there was a trend of folks not
knowing who their next door neighbors were. There were a lot of
reasons for this: TV (and later the Web) was where people spent
their nights instead of on their front porch, people worked in many
places across a metro-region instead of in just one or two major
factories in a smaller town, kids were bussed to different schools
instead of all attending the same local school. The reasons added
up to neighborhoods without connection between living on the same
streets.

To fight that trend a Midwest group envisioned a night were folks
would turn off their TVs and step out on their front lawns and wave
and Heaven-forbid, actually speak to their neighbors. This was the
birth of the National Night Out movement.

Many places with Neighbor Watch programs elected for block
parties. Some had pot-lucks, most just made do with letting the kids
play in the street while the adults chatted.

Lincoln Village is roughly a 1 mile by 1 mile space with more than
five thousand souls. We are a very diverse group of residents,
coming form every corner of this world. It seemed the best approach
to continue to build a sense of community for us, was for LVNA to
host a Street Fair.

It isn't a State Fair with a big midway (although we do plan one game
plus the popcorn and snow cone machines). Half our space will be
filled with information tables devoted to city agencies or other
government partners. Much of the rest will have local vendor
showing you their goods.

At the core, this is a time and place for people who live side by side,
to come out into the light of day and have fun, side-by-side.

Hope to see you there, having fun, and enjoying your lIncoln village
neighbors.

Cross Walk to the Park

I think there should be a cross walk leading to the Lincoln Village
Community Park by the Romford Way and Vanguard Drive entrance
and some speed bumps along Vanguard Drive, because kids walk
across Vanguard Drive to the park and I've seen kids almost get hit
there. Vanguard Drive is a busy street that a lot of kids walk on
going to A.M. Winn Elementary School and to the park. I see cars
speeding down that street every day. The city has done lots of work
on that  street, but what we really still need is child safety (namely
-speed bumps, cross walk, and "stop" sign).

Thank you.

                         Tell Me Why?

Can anyone tell me why I and my neighbors are mowing & weeding
our lawns on Redstone Drive when the house for sale at 9953
Redstone Drive has weeds so tall a tiger could safely hide among
them?
